College Admissions Visual
Common Data Set (2020-2021)
Using data from an array of US schools, I created this dashboard to make college information accessible. This data is published by most schools in the form of the Common Data Set (CDS), which covers ten distinct sections:
General Information
Enrollment and Persistence
First-Time, First-Year Admission
Transfer Admission
Academic Offerings and Policies
Student Life
Annual Expenses
Financial Aid
Instructional Faculty and Class Size
Degrees Conferred
Considering that there is an overwhelming amount of data to dig through, I displayed what I considered to be the most relevant, quantifiable, and visualize-able statistics: the college’s decision matrix/basis for selection, standardized test quartiles and spreads, tuition (in and out-of-state), acceptance rate, freshman class by ethnicity, student-faculty ratio, and a few other metrics.
While there are other websites and software that display the same information, often times a manual search is required to look at each statistic for each college (lots of redundancy). This dashboard creates a centralized location for important information and allows you to quickly and easily switch between institutions.
Note: If a statistic/visual is blank, it means that the school did not fill out the CDS for that section or at all
Note: Due to the irregularity of CDS completion and formatting, data collection is done by hand, which leaves room for incorrect data entry and human error. If you notice any inconsistencies/possible errors, let me know at the bottom of the page!
Note: Power BI embedded dashboards are not optimized for mobile usage, please use a larger device to explore the dashboard!
